When is the Best Time of Year to Get Married in Maine?
If you’re dreaming of a Maine wedding, you’re already on the right track. From its rugged coastline to golden fall foliage, Maine delivers some of the most stunning backdrops you could ask for. But when is the best time to get married here?
The answer depends on what matters most to you—weather, scenery, availability, and budget all play a role. As wedding photographers and filmmakers who document celebrations all across Maine, we’ve seen it all. Let’s break down what each season has to offer so you can find the perfect fit for your wedding vision.

Spring Weddings in Maine (April–May)
The Vibe:
Fresh, romantic, and full of soft, natural beauty.
Spring in Maine can be a bit unpredictable, but if you time it right, you’ll get blooming florals, lush greenery, and mild temperatures. May is the sweet spot—early enough to avoid summer crowds but late enough to dodge the unpredictable early-spring weather.

Pros:
✅ Fresh florals and soft pastel palettes
✅ Milder temperatures, especially in late spring
✅ Slightly lower venue and vendor costs compared to peak summer
Cons:
❌ March and April can still feel like winter
❌ “Mud season” is real—rural locations may be a challenge
❌ Limited outdoor venue options early in the season
Best for:
Couples who love a fresh, airy aesthetic and want a romantic, slightly off-peak wedding. You’re most likely to be able to book most vendors you want, as this is a less popular time to book!
Summer Weddings in Maine (June-August)
The Vibe:
Iconic Maine—warm breezes, golden light, and peak coastal beauty.
Summer is when Maine comes alive. Long days, warm weather, and a bustling atmosphere make it a popular choice. If you’re envisioning an oceanfront ceremony or a lakeside reception, this is your season. Just be prepared for high demand—August competes for our busiest month of the year, rivaled by September, with July right behind.

Pros:
✅ Long daylight hours for gorgeous golden-hour portraits
✅ Best season for coastal, lakefront, and outdoor weddings
✅ More predictable weather than spring or fall
Cons:
❌ Peak tourist season—hotels book up fast, and traffic can be a factor
❌ High demand means vendors and venues book far in advance
❌ Some inland areas can get humid in July and August
Best for:
Couples who want that classic Maine summer feel—think sailboats in the background, warm breezes, and sunset receptions by the water.
Fall Weddings in Maine (September-November)
The Vibe:
Crisp air, golden foliage, and the most breathtaking scenery of the year.
If you’ve seen photos of Maine in the fall, you already know—it’s stunning. September and October are some of the most popular months to get married here, and for good reason. The weather is cooler but still comfortable, and the foliage turns the entire landscape into a painter’s dream. In our opinion, September weather is the perfect blend between a Maine Summer Wedding and a Maine Fall Wedding… however that comes at the cost of HIGH booking volume.
Josie and I take in our highest number of inquiries for September, usually about 40-50 inquiries for the 4 (sometimes 5) available Saturdays of the month.

Pros:
✅ Peak foliage (late September to mid-October) for jaw-dropping scenery
✅ Comfortable outdoor temperatures—less heat, no bugs
✅ Slightly less tourist traffic than summer (but let’s be real, not by much)
Cons:
❌ High demand—September is our busiest month, and October is close behind
❌ Peak weekends book up 12-18 months in advance
❌ Late fall (November) starts feeling wintery, with fewer floral options
Best for:
Couples who value great weather—think sunny and 70º. Cooler night temperatures, sweatshirts by the campfire, and sunset portraits in golden light.
Winter Weddings in Maine (December-February)
The Vibe:
Intimate and Cozy
Winter weddings in Maine aren’t for everyone, but for the right couple, they’re absolutely stunning. Snow-covered landscapes, candlelit receptions, and the possibility of a crackling fireplace create an unforgettable atmosphere. Plus, vendors and venues have more availability, making planning a little easier.
In our opinion, you need a strong indoor venue in what you will lack in outside beauty. The one problem with weather in Maine: you never know what you’re going to get. We could have dead grass and bare trees in January, a muddy mess, if it gets too warm, or we could have the perfect magical dusting of snow on your big day.

Pros:
✅ Lower costs—venues and vendors often have off-season pricing
✅ A unique, cozy atmosphere that feels romantic and intimate
✅ More availability for vendors and venues
Cons:
❌ Cold temperatures—outdoor portraits require some planning
❌ Travel can be unpredictable due to snow and ice
❌ Fewer floral and outdoor venue options
Best for:
Couples who want a unique, intimate wedding with a cozy winter aesthetic.
